Rant below.
When it comes to work, sometimes I feel like I'm the only guy who believes in doing his job the best he can until it's done. I have been busting my ass for almost a quarter-century now in multiple different jobs in various industries, and I always seem to be surrounded by grown men who are the whiniest pieces of shit you've ever seen. I'm currently in a decidedly blue-collar industry (logistics). I get so tired of guys that bitch about lifting heavy shit, or "it's too hot/cold", or "the roads are bad and I don't want to drive". That's just in my current job; I've seen it everywhere though. From a teenager who (I shit you not) locked himself in the cooler of a fast-food restaurant because he couldn't go on break when he wanted, to an assistant manager of mine in a convenience store who walked out in the middle of a shift because I told him he needed to do better.
And it's not anything you can blame solely on a specific race or generation. There are a wide range of ages and shapes and colors of guys that I would like nothing better than to club like a baby seal.
Sure, some guys hate their jobs. I might even be one of them. But you know what? As long as I am employed, I'm going to roll up my sleeves and get to work, and I'm going to do the work until it's done, and I'm going to do it RIGHT. I've worked a 17-hour shift before. I've hauled 800 lbs of boxes up 3 flights of stairs in 90+ degree heat by myself in less than 30 minutes. I've driven 450+ miles in the course of one day to ensure a patient had their medical needs taken care of. Not because I wanted to, but because God damn it I'm a man and I do my job until it's done. It's not my employers' fault if I don't like my job, it's my fault for continuing to work there. So since it isn't their fault, I owe them my best every day without fail, or I'd not just be failing them. I'd be failing myself.
And you know what? That's nothing to brag about. Lots of guys work harder than me. Some have to work in dangerous situations I probably can't even comprehend. Any man that has ever lifted a gun to defend their country is way beyond my level. I feel like my level should be the average, any less and you're just wasting your time AND everybody else's. When I see guys get away with half-assing it on a daily basis while bitching about how hard they have it, it makes my blood boil.
TL;DR: I'm tired of grown men who whine and complain about their work and end up barely doing any.
PS: I work in an industry that tends to be male-dominated, which is why I'm pretty much only referring to men. The women that work in it never seem to have this problem. Also, I don't disclose many details for anonymity reasons and also because it isn't really necessary; the problem seems to be everywhere.

Get. Out. Of. My. Head.
This is honestly how I feel everyday. I'm lucky that I contract with a company that when we work together, the people are of my same mindset.
However, I can't stand when people can't just do their damn job. I understand that I do my best because I believe that to be for the best, just do what is outlined in your job description and then go home.
Good rant. You won the internet!

The world would be a better place if everyone lived by this motto: "Do your job and do it right, or get the fuck out of the way so someone else can."

ladies do it too - work with a couple, in late, leave early, do as I say not as I do, call out others to distract from their own poor performance...

It's not my employers' fault if I don't like my job, it's my fault for continuing to work there.

I've always thought that if you're willing to accept that paycheck you do the best job you can. Whenever I hear someone complain to the likes of "Maybe if they paid me more..." I want to strangle them.
You get a follow for your admirable work ethic.

As I said, I work in a male-dominated business. For what it's worth, over the last 10 years I can count on one hand the number of women who have pissed me off as much as the guys do and have fingers left over.

I'm in my twenties and I thought that at work. I'm here to get shit done.

my personal motto at work was "Do your f-ing job, you ADD-ridden child, or you're toast." despite this, I had employers who don't give a shit about their workers.

One of my co-workers is a younger guy that is working his ass off. His workload is too much for one person to handle, but he keeps chugging along. I'm impressed, though a bit worried for his sanity. It also gives me hope that some guys still get it.

Yeah, but there's nothing you can do about that. The only thing you can do is your best, and then if it isn't working find a place where your effort and work ethic are rewarded. You have to make it come to you, sometimes. I hope that happens for everyone.

Took the words out of my mouth.
My fiance hears that phrase many times over, albeit in many different iterations.

You nailed it. Somehow many of these guys get management positions. Those guys and the ones who put them there are the ones that really piss me off. In my line of work, you make more money the harder you work, so most of those lazy asshats burn out real quick. But a lot of people above me are absolutely useless wastes of space.

Now, I will bitch about the weather outside when it's 0 with a 20 mph North wind, and I may occasionally joke about wanting an elevator at work when I'm lugging an 80 lb. workstation up the stairs or a UPS down them, but dammit, I get shit done. I may share a rant with my coworkers who are just as frustrated as I am about only getting needed information at the last possible second, but we pitch in, we get shit done, and we stand proud in front of our servers and workstations!
Also, it's a matter of personal pride that when shit hits the fan, and someone is needed to get it cleaned up, I'm the one who gets the call, instead of the guys who've been there for years. I /like/ being the go-to guy, even if it means longer hours, because it means I'm doing my job the way it's supposed to be.

All I can say is you're gonna have to be different if you have kids or some influence on kids. Because our mainstream culture is locked in adolescent behavior, and only the weird are gonna make a difference, usually with a lot of resistance.
We have woofers come through the land all the time and I'd say 98% are cool in various aspects, but don't get the over all program. They eat dinner, but don't even think to help in the kitchen. They do exactly what's asked of them, but won't lift a finger to do something that's not asked, but is 95% related and right there. ("You didn't ask me to do that!?") They come for a talk on the land, know it's going to be cold, know that dinner is gonna be served but 1) don't bring meat/eats or 2) don't even bring in any firewood.
Those 2% though - they can stay as long as they want. When they are here, they are *here*. Very rare behavior though. And it gets rarer still as I get older, and that's not a generation thing, it's the same expectations I've always had.
I hear ya. My only advice - make a difference in your corner of the world, because when the shit hits the fan, problematically speaking, those are the folk that are gonna make it.
